I remember some years back, when I was still undergoing Auto Diagnosis training from my Boss
A very intelligent man, an Ex Police Officer, his experience in Auto Diagnosis is top-notch
During those days, when people come for diagnosis, they will complain of high fuel consumption and will plead with my Boss to help them reduce their car fuel consumption with his diagnostic machines
He has over 20 different diagnostic machines even for trucks
Imagine complaining of high fuel consumption when fuel was sold at #162, wetin you go talk now that fuel is #600 per litre
Majority of these people paid deaf attention to the recommendations my Boss gave them after diagnosis, they were more interested in reducing their car fuel consumption
How do you want him to reduce your car fuel consumption when you’ve not fixed the underlying issues in your car?
I overheard few of them saying that after changing their fuel pump, servicing the nozzles, changing ignition plugs and engine oil, their car fuel consumption was still very high than expected
Until their mechanic told them to visit my Boss to reduce the fuel consumption of their cars
They would rather pay #10K for that than pay 10K for Full System Diagnosis
My boss tried severally to school them about air-fuel mixture in ICE based on engine capacity, displacement, fuel quality, etc
But they never cared, most times they look at him as incompetent and zoom off
Until one day, my Boss decided to play along with them
Once they come with the fuel consumption reduction story, my Boss will signal me or the other guys to bring Techstream, Foxwell or Xtool
Plug them and read the freeze frame plus Live Data Analysis
We will perform Check Engine reset, read freeze frame, live data analysis, RPM load test, electronic load test, active test on Bank 1 injectors and the fuel pump for few minutes
Reset the AF readings, check CAT reading etc, then call the client and show him the injector reading and the amount of fuel it sprays per second
“Wow” was always their first response
Well, you’ve to buy 1 bottle of injector cleaner, pour it when your car is at quarter tank then mind how you drive, don’t drive with a fat foot etc
They fail to understand that once the diagnostic machine is unplugged from the car, the ECM will revert back to normal operation
Good a thing is, after doing that, they won’t come back with same complain for some months until their mechanic advice them again
Wetin dey vex me pass be say most of these people are educated and shouldn’t be gullible but …………..
How do you let your mechanic convince you that without solving the listed issues with the car that it won’t affect the fuel consumption?
Anyway, don’t be too gullible next time, once there are underlying issues with your car, the full consumption will be affected drastically or negligible depending on issues
Yes, there’s ECU Coding and ECU Tuning but it goes beyond fuel consumption reduction
Fix the issues with your car and see the performance or fuel consumption reduce drastically 👌
